That conversation was 6 months into my contract.
That's exactly how long it took for me to try on, acclimatize, get used to and accept my personal geography. They say it takes up to two years.
That seems like forever, so I wouldn't be lying if I said I was relieved to stop cranking my head west to just get down to it.
I funneled all of my thoughts in a pro-Toronto direction.
This exposed one of the bloodlines and selling points of this city: The enormous amount of creativity walking around. As soon as I had given my head a shake and started investing in staying, they came out of the woodwork.
I went to Chicago with friends. We gazed at our mug shots in the reflection of The Bean and ordered cocktails in back-in-the-day mafia spots.
I went to New York with other friends. We sat on Bob Dylan's old stoop in Greenwich Village and saw a Friday night show at the Comedy Cellar.
As soon as I let myself,
I eased further and further into the right hand side of North America.
To be continued...
Why 12 for Toronto?
I want anyone, from a first-time tourist to the seasoned city veteran, to wander through our shops and have their eyes hook on a colourful film photograph taken from right here in our neighbourhoods.
To be able to pen a simple note to someone, not on outdated souvenir paper, but on a meaningful alternative they can send not only from them, but from this diverse, beautiful, commanding beast of a city.
I want these notes to go around the world.
For pieces of Toronto to land everywhere to exclaim the goodness and pride we have in our home.
EACH CARD IS AVAILABLE TODAY, WITH A BOXED SET OF ALL 12 AVAILABLE AT THE END OF THE SERIES ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 28!
